Alcohol citations fall sharply for Fling 2005

After reviewing data from the weekend, University Police have confirmed that there were 16 alcohol citations on or near campus during Spring Fling.

All the citations were issued by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, not the Penn Police.

In total, there were 17 alcohol-related and summary citations over the weekend. Police issued the additional citation to a 22-year-old student who was arrested for urinating on the street.

In 2004, there were 30 total alcohol-related and summary citations. There were 11 in 2003.

Penn Police Chief Mark Dorsey said he did not know exactly how many of the total citations from past years were alcohol-related but estimated that a majority of them were.

Dorsey said that most of the citations from this year were issued from Saturday night to Sunday morning, but said he did not yet have a complete breakdown of the numbers.

"That was when there were the highest total," Dorsey said.

He added that at least several of the cited individuals were students visiting from other schools.

"I believe all of [the citations] were out-of-state," Dorsey said. "A large number of them could not be Penn students. But they were all cited and released."
