News brief: Police arrest three juveniles in robbery

Police arrested three teenage males unaffiliated with the University around 11:45 p.m. Friday in the 200th block of South 40th Street in connection with an attempted robbery of a male student.

Penn Police Detective Frank DeMeo said the three males -- ages 13, 16 and 17 -- surrounded the student near 4000 Pine St. and demanded that he give them money.

The student refused, and after the juveniles made the same demand a second time, the student walked away. The teens allegedly cursed at the student, then left the scene as well.

Soon after, the intended victim notified the police and pointed out the teens to them. Police arrested the males and took them to the Youth Study Center at 20th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

A hearing yesterday morning, however, acquitted the 16- and 17-year-old defendants, but charged the 13-year-old with robbery, conspiracy and attempted theft.

Friday marks the third time this year that police have made an arrest for robbing a student.
