Though the selection for this year's Spring Fling concert is unknown, progress toward April's event continues with the selection yesterday of this year's theme, "Destination: Fling."
But if recent tradition holds, the theme might be nothing more than a logo.
In its 33rd year, the weekend of fun, food and music will be held on April 15 and 16 in the Quad.
"Destination: Fling" was chosen from a list of more than 30 themes by the Spring Fling Committee, a branch of the Social Planning and Events Committee. Co-Director Catey Mark came up with the idea.
"This is actually one of the first times ['Fling'] didn't just replace a word in a phrase -- it's just totally unique," the Wharton sophomore said.
Mark said that the previous themes for Spring Fling did not play a prominent role. She said the goal of this year's theme is to "actually shape Fling," though she did not give any specifics as to how that might happen.
Destination: Fling "gives us a lot of possibilities ... to incorporate our theme more into the actual event," added co-Director and College sophomore Makeda Kefale.
But several students said the theme does not hold any real importance compared to the actual event.
"My opinion is, I don't really care about the theme -- it's all about the music and the Quad," said Wharton junior Casey Anderson.
When asked to recollect what last year's theme was, College senior Dan Afergan said he didn't remember it and that this year's theme should be "Lord of the Flings" instead.
"I don't see the theme as really important -- it's just a phrase," Afergan said.
College sophomore Elizabeth Candido agreed, adding that the theme does not detract nor add to the fun.
"I don't think people are paying actual attention to the theme," Candido said.
Still, students said they are looking forward to Spring Fling to relieve stress before exams.
"The theme makes it sound like it's going to be one big party," College freshman Sarah Abroms said. "I'm really excited about the concerts -- my hall is going to be busy and crazy."
Spring Fling coordinators said that plans are going smoothly and that they are excited as the weekend nears.
SPEC also sponsors a contest to determine the design for the annual Spring Fling t-shirts . Submissions for the "Destination: Fling" logo are due next Friday.
