At approximately 8:10 p.m. on Oct. 14, five female Penn students engaged in a brief scuffle with seven or eight other young females who are unaffiliated with the University.
The five complainants reported that, on the 4000 block of Spruce Street, they were confronted and surrounded by the group of juveniles, whom they described as 16-year-olds and younger.
"It looked like just some pushing and shoving," University Police Detective Frank DeMaio said. He added, however, that he could not be sure of the exact nature of the physical contact.
"We don't really know [exactly] what took place or what triggered it," he said.
After the scuffle, both sides apparently dispersed. No arrests have been made.
"It happens once in a great while," DeMaio said of this type of conflict between Penn students and local youths. He added that recently there have been no similar occurrences.
"It was just two parties passing in the night that clashed."
