Volleyball's Zhang named Ivy Rookie of the Week

Freshman volleyball player Linda Zhang was named the Ivy League's Rookie of the Week yesterday.

In her first action ever with the Quakers, Zhang recorded 10 kills and had 56 set attempts in Penn's 3-1 win over Duquesne at the Fairfield Inn Jefferson Cup.

In the team's second game, she tallied two digs and 14 set attempts, as Penn trounced Radford, 3-0.

Zhang had 50 set attempts and six kills in the finals of the Jefferson Cup, as Penn fell to host Virginia, 3-2.

The freshman was named to the All-Tournament team, along with teammate Cara Thomason. Thomason was Penn's selection for the weekly Ivy Volleyball Honor Roll for this past week.

A previously unknown name has recently appeared on the men's basketball team's online roster.

It appears as if Adam Franklin, a junior Wharton transfer from North Carolina, will be playing with the Quakers this upcoming season.

Last year, Franklin played for the Tar Heels' junior varsity basketball team.

In an article on CarolinaBlue.com, a Tar Heels insider Web site, Franklin was described as the "team's go-to-player."

The Penn roster lists Franklin as 6-foot-6 and 250 pounds.

Franklin hails from New Castle, Del., where he played high school basketball for The Tatnall School.

In 2002, during his senior year in high school, Franklin was named first-team All-Independent Conference. Also selected for that squad was Will Sheridan, then a junior at the Sanford School.

Sheridan, a 6-foot-8 forward, now plays for Villanova.

Franklin was also named Honorable Mention All-State in 2002.

Since Franklin did not play varsity basketball at North Carolina, he will not have to sit out this season for the Quakers.
