Cornell picks Knowles as new football coach
ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) -- Jim Knowles was hired as the new head coach at Cornell on Friday, returning to the school where he spent nine years as an assistant.
Knowles coached linebackers, running backs and served as recruiting coordinator at Cornell from 1988-96.
He helped the Big Redto Ivy League titles in 1988and '90.
Knowles replaces Tim Pendergast, who was fired in November after a 1-9 season. Pendergast had an overall record of 7-22 in three seasons, and went 5-16 in the Ivy League.
Last season, Knowles was the linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator at Mississippi. He was also an assistant for six seasons at Western Michigan.
Knowles was a defensive end at Cornell from 1985-87. He earned All-Ivy honors in 1986.
