Haefner to participate in MLS Draft Combine

Penn senior goalkeeper Matt Haefner has been selected to participate in the 2004 adidas MLS Player combine from Jan. 11 to Jan. 13 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

General managers and members of coaching staffs from all 10 teams will be scouting the talent in preparation for the 2004 SuperDraft, which will be held on Friday, Jan. 16, at the Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte, N.C.

The field of players was determined by a select panel of Division I college coaches in conjunction with MLS coaches and also the consultation of select Division II, Division III and NAIA coaches.

Haefner spearheaded the Quakers' Ivy League Championship during his junior year with his solid play between the posts.

During his breakout year, Haefner allowed only 11 goals in 17 games. His 10 shutouts on the season tied a Penn record that was set back in 1973.

The Amherst, N.Y., native garnered a number of accolades for his impressive play in 2002. He was named third-team NSCAA/Adidas Men's Division I All-America.
