John Edgar Wideman, a 1963 College graduate and English Professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, will be recognized for his achievements as an award-winning author. Wideman, who has written 13 books, became the first two-time recipient of the PEN/Faulkner Award -- in 1984 and 1990. A basketball star at the University, Wideman also received the American Book Award for Fiction in 1990, a MacArthur Award in 1993 and an honorary degree from the University in 1986. Leonard Apt, a 1942 College graduate and ophthalmology professor emeritus at the University of California at Los Angeles, will be honored for his scientific achievements. As the first physician with specialties in both pediatrics and an ophthalmology, Apt also established the first full-time Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology at UCLA in 1961. Apt has received the Distinguished Achievement Award of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus in 1995 and the Medical College Alumni Achievement Award in 1992 from Thomas Jefferson, where he attended medical school. -- Tammy Polonsky Screamer to be held tonight at FUBAR The Senior Class Board will be sponsoring the third Senior Screamer of the year tonight at FUBAR, according to Senior Class President Lenny Chang. Chang, a Wharton senior, said the event will begin at 10 p.m. with a $5 open bar until midnight. From then until 2 a.m. there will be no cover charge for seniors, although drinks will be sold at regular price. Students must bring their PennCards in order to be admitted without cover, Change said. He added that the ska band Fighting Gravity will be performing at the Screamer.
