Penn Engineering announces domain change to ‘unify’ school identity

The School of Engineering and Applied Science will adopt a new domain in an effort to improve consistency and reinforce its institutional identity.

Starting June 16, email addresses and websites associated with the school will begin transitioning from “seas.upenn.edu” to “engineering.upenn.edu,” according to an announcement earlier this month. The change is “part of the School’s ongoing efforts to strengthen and unify the Penn Engineering brand.”

In a statement to The Daily Pennsylvanian, the Engineering School’s Chief Marketing and Communications Officer Eleni Rengepis wrote that the development contributes to a larger “branding and digital identity strategy.” She added that the new domain “more directly reflects their affiliation with Penn Engineering and the strength of the School’s reputation in research, education, and innovation.”

“We believe it will strengthen recognition of Penn Engineering both within the University and among external audiences, including prospective students, employers, industry partners, and alumni,” Rengepis wrote. “More broadly, the change supports Penn’s efforts to showcase the distinct strengths of its schools while maintaining the collaborative, interdisciplinary culture that defines the University.”

According to the Engineering School’s Chief Information Officer Kris Varhus, the address change will not create a second mailbox.

“All Penn Engineering undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and staff will use ‘@engineering.upenn.edu,’” Varhus wrote to the DP. “Users will receive mail sent to either address, but the ‘engineering.upenn.edu’ address will be their primary address.”

Rengepis added that the domain transition is occurring alongside other brand identity initiatives that the Engineering School has enacted, including website improvements and changes to digital communications.

“At this time, there are no major changes that would affect students’ academic experience, and any future updates that impact students directly would be communicated well in advance,” she wrote.

The email announcement similarly stated that members of the Engineering community do not need to take any “immediate action” to comply with the transition. Existing email addresses will still “function uninterrupted,” though users must include the new domain in their username for future logins.

The Engineering School already refers to itself as “Penn Engineering” across its website and social media.
