It's clear that the Department of Defense's policy excluding gays, lesbians and bisexuals from the military is incompatible with the University's Nondiscriminatory Statement. Therefore, University Council has decided that unless the DoD policy is overturned before 1993 by the courts, by Congress or by Cheney himself, the Reserve Officers Training Corps should be kicked off campus. Yet, Hackney has so far refused to endorse the Council resolution, saying that he prefers to try other channels before talking about kicking ROTC off campus. From the tone of Cheney's comments during his recent on-campus appearance, little progress can be expected by simply asking the DoD to drop the discriminatory policy. It's time for Hackney to commit to carrying out the Council resolution if efforts to have the policy changed through other channels fail.
