One of the hottest debate topics for the upcoming presidential election has been the choice between universal or free-market health care insurance. However, health care is just damage control, according to contributing doctors of the TV series "Unnatural Causes" on PBS.

As many Penn students finalize term papers, child-rearing issues may seem far from their concerns. However, a large turnout of students from Penn Nursing, including future midwives, maternity researchers and other advocates, were all eager last night to discuss the child-birthing process, as well as social challenges and changes in maternity care.

Twice a year, Penn safety personnel who act on behalf of students, faculty and staff with outstanding bravery and dedication are publicly recognized by colleagues and student organizations, illustrating a campus-wide appreciation. Leading the way, University President Amy Gutmann welcomed the nearly 100 uniformed officers and student heroes to receive awards at the Division of Public Safety Commendations ceremony and the Penn Police Department Oath of Office ceremony last night.

Women make up 40 percent of Americans with assets more than $5 million - and yesterday Caren Karpf gave a group of Penn women advice on how to join those ranks. Karpf, a Wharton alumna, CPA and financial planner, was the speaker for last night's Women in Leadership Series lecture, "Managing Your Finances: A Workshop for Penn Women.

Penn students reported their findings on a region hit hardest by Katrina, the deadliest hurricane in U.S. history, last night at a panel entitled "Penn in the Gulf." On Jan. 12, 2008, students and faculty from the Schools of Dental Medicine, Engineering and Applied Science, Nursing, Social Policy and Practice and Veterinary Medicine provided volunteer services at a well-attended health fair in Pearlington, Miss.

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright is already offering her advice to the next president. "The best part about not being Secretary of State is being able to answer questions," Albright said in front of nearly 600 people at the Free Library of Philadelphia yesterday afternoon.
