Research shows marriage not an HIV solution

In Malawi, every boyfriend is a "sugar daddy" - in fact, regularly supplying one's "chibwenzi," or "friend/sexual partner," with money is not a form of prostitution but a normal and expected behavior in premarital Malawian sexual relationships. Michelle Poulin, a postdoctoral fellow in the Population Studies Center at Penn, spoke yesterday about dating and marriage in the midst of the AIDS epidemic in Africa in the McNeil Building.


Igo argues stats create stereotypes

"Angry White Man" may not be as angry as you think he is. History professor Sarah Igo presented her book The Averaged American - in part about how statistics create incomplete stereotypes of American individuals - at the Penn Bookstore last Thursday night to a cozy audience of just over thirty members.


Profs speak on the city of three religions

After feasting on falafel, 40-some audience members sat down with satiated stomachs and open minds to listen to a discussion entitled "Jerusalem: One City, Three Religions" last night at the Penn Newman Center. Panelists included visiting scholars David Johnston and Rehav Rubin, as well as Religious Studies professor Guy Stroumsa.
