Ten days after a return to in-person classes for fall 2021 was announced, the Quakers moved into Ivy Phase IV and spring sports teams are now being allowed to have in-person competitions against local universities. As shifts towards a post-pandemic college atmosphere occur, we take a look at what the fall will look like on campus.

The conclusion to the historic tale of Team USA's squash run in the 2019 Pan American Games came down to the last man on the team — twice. It was Andrew Douglas of Penn men’s squash, the only college player on the roster, who would step up to the semi-final round and face Alfredo Avila — former No. 35 in the world, hailing from the first-seeded favorites of Mexico. 

The Quakers opened their season with a close loss to Delaware before the mercy rule was invoked in their second game against the Blue Hens. 

On Saturday, the Penn track hosted the Penn Challenge, welcoming local schools Rider, Villanova, St. Joseph’s, and Temple to Franklin Field for the meet. Emotions were running high for the Quakers, with athletes and coaches alike thrilled to be back in action.

Orie’s path to competing at Penn was atypical. The Buffalo, N.Y. native grew up as a multi-sport athlete, sampling nearly every sport that she could. Even when it came time to specialize in sports early in high school, running hadn’t crossed Orie’s mind yet.

Growing up in Croatia, Curnic found a love for tennis at the age of five. Despite the strong competition, she performed well in all of her tournaments and started to take tennis more seriously when she was 11, playing for the Croatian national team. Eventually, she found herself on a much larger stage, competing in tournaments across Europe at the age of 15. 

Although Vogel was not able to finish her collegiate career on the field with the Quakers, she has still been able to make her mark on the team even during the virtual season. Vogel was named co-captain this past fall, and has worked to keep the team connected and motivated despite the lost season.

Title IX, a federal civil rights law passed as part of the Education Amendments of 1972, was enacted June 23, 1972 and its interpretation was published in June, 1974. It was designed to prevent discrimination based on sex in educational programs or activities, including athletics.

For some, the new exception changes little, especially for those who didn't have any plans to go to graduate school or play another season. However, for others, it was a decision that came at an inconvenient time and impacted plans for next year.
