More importantly, though, Yik Yak also forces us to face the aspects of Penn we’d rather ignore. Maybe we have to be anonymous to feel comfortable calling attention to the lesser-discussed elements of Penn’s campus. Yaks like “Penn is the school for smart kids who constantly need to counter their intelligence with binge drinking,” and, “Everyone on campus is a functioning alcoholic and it’s a beautiful thing” call attention to elements of Penn we accept without question.


The College Republicans’ article may not have been trendsetting, as I have already mentioned, but rather than continue the trend of partisan squabbling, we can still foster a new style of politics in response based on mutual respect. Penn Dems and College Republicans do not have to be mutually exclusive. They are not by default or by definition opposed and perennially at odds with one another.

Jeff Raider, co-founder of Warby Parker, along with partner Andy Katz-Mayfield, launched H'University, pronounced "Hoo-niversity," last year. The program's purpose is “to teach college students valuable skills they wouldn’t learn in class and prepare them for the challenges and opportunities of the real world,” according to its website.

Launched in February 2014, Barring Eyewear is a Philadelphia-based company founded by three students aspiring to create high-quality and affordable sunglasses. The co-founders of the company, inspired by their mutual love for sunglasses and concern for cancer research, built Barring Eyewear to raise fundings for cancer research.

The divestment club Fossil Free Penn had their first meeting of the year on  Sept. 25  in Harrison College House.  The club demands that the University freeze new investments in fossil fuels, divest their current investments and reinvest their money in sustainable companies or projects.

On Friday, Pakathon, a Pakistan oriented hackathon, began its second annual startup weekend with teams in 16 cities across North America and Pakistan. During the three day conference, groups of students worked to create technological solutions to problems in Pakistan.


Penn football loses their first home game of the season to Villanova, 41-7.

After suffering a brutal straight-set loss to Princeton in Friday night's Ivy League opener, Penn came into Sunday's non-conference battle with Dayton, looking to regain its footing before its upcoming Ivy bout with Columbia.

The next bucket of cases centers around vague, almost meaningless benefits, such as “learning how to learn” and “learning for its own sake.” The latter advantage is particularly dubious; roller coasters are ridden for their own sake, the experience to be quickly forgotten once the seat belt is unbuckled. In the current environment, would a student really embark on a course of study whose benefits leave him as soon as he obtains a diploma, just for its own sake?
