Goucher College, a small liberal arts college near Baltimore, recently announced a new policy allowing applicants to send in a video instead of an academic transcript.
High school students can now apply to Goucher using two writing samples (at least one must be a graded high school writing assignment) and a two-minute video. This process expands upon the test-score optional policy, seen at a growing number of colleges and universities including Bowdoin, Smith, and Holy Cross.
While the video application has drawn criticism from others within the academic sphere, Dr. Bowen, the president of Goucher College defends it with, “you have to find a way to encourage people to apply; they need a different kind of invitation, and students by and large have a phone and they understand video,” he said.
