Fall 2013 Undergraduate Assembly Elections

M. Squash | After easy warmup, Ephs prove tough

It was home sweet home for the men's squash team on Saturday. Playing at Ringe Courts for the first time in six weeks, Penn downed Amherst, 9-0, in the morning and handled Williams, 6-3, just hours later. The No. 7 Quakers (5-2, 1-2 Ivy) had an auspicious start to the semester and to their stretch of four non-conference contests.

After a tense day of trading wins with Yale, the Penn women's swimming team needed to place first and second in the 400-yard freestyle relay - the day's last event - to tie the meet. Unfortunately, the women finished first and third, and as a result, the Bulldogs beat the Quakers, 152-148, in the Penn-Yale-Dartmouth tri-meet in Hanover, N.

After five years and hundreds of frivolous lawsuits, the Recording Industry Association of America's "war" on illegal downloading has moved out of its legal phase. This could not have happened soon enough. The random pursuit of a handful of those who regularly file share was an exercise in futility that highlighted the group's dismaying refusal to adapt to a changing technological landscape.

The Latest

President-elect Barack Obama, his wife Michelle and their two daughters, Malia and Sasha, began their inaugural journey at 30th Street Station on Saturday morning. But unlike his other stops along the way, Obama did not hold a public event in the city. In his prepared remarks, Obama addressed the small gathering of ticketed supporters in a private room within the station, telling them it was fitting to begin his journey in Philadelphia because "it was here, in this city, that the American journey began.

Comedians may be more effective than politicians in addressing the tensions surrounding the current conflict in the Middle East. Noel Elgrably, Elham Jazab and Mike Batayeh, a group of Middle Eastern comedians who call themselves the Sultans of Satire, held a panel discussion Friday on the role of comedy in alleviating Islamophobia. The events were cosponsored by the Penn Middle East Center and the Levantine Cultural Center.

On a day when the world's attention was focused on Washington, D.C., members of the Penn community who were unable to make the 124-mile trip could still catch the inauguration action on Penn's campus. The University's official Presidential Inauguration Celebration Program began at 10 a.

Like most of his Penn teammates, sophomore guard Harrison Gaines looked lethargic in the first half against winless NJIT. From the outset, the Highlanders were determined to slow the pace of the game and deny the ball to Penn's first option, Tyler Bernardini.

As prepared for delivery, provided by the Presidential Inaugural Committee. We are here to mark the beginning of our journey to Washington. This is fitting because it was here, in this city, that our American journey began. It was here that a group of farmers and lawyers, merchants and soldiers, gathered to declare their independence and lay claim to a destiny that they were being denied.

W. Squash | Lange keeps cool as Penn stays perfect

Junior squash player Kristen Lange won her first two games, 9-3, 9-0, against Williams' number one player, Toby Eyre, but when it came down to game three, she felt herself lose some control over the match this past Saturday. "I got really anxious and started trying to end the points really quickly," Lange said.

Best note-takers, worst note-takers, no-note-takers: take note. You could be making money - or making the grade - on GradeGuru.com, the file-sharing Web site that pays you to upload your notes and allows you to download the notes of your peers for free. If it sounds like an impossible business model, it's because the year-old site isn't bringing in any revenue just yet.

I'm easily distracted. I have to have my background noise while studying, and during class there are plenty of things that can steal my attention away from the professor --- Gchat, Digg and Perez Hilton, to name a few. The majority of my distractions have one thing in common - they originate on a lovely little thing we call "the Internet" and are accessible on a portable device called the "laptop.

M. Hoops | Change for America, but not NJIT

NEWARK, N.J., Jan. 17 - The scariest thing about the New Jersey Institute of Technology's Fleisher Center isn't who plays in it. The Highlanders' basketball team has set historical lows since entering Division I after the 2005-06 season and, naturally, don't boast a particularly impressive set of weapons.

The search is officially on for Penn's next provost. In a memo sent out to faculty members last Wednesday, University President Amy Gutmann announced the formation of an ad hoc consultative committee that, along with Gutmann, will select a new provost to succeed Ron Daniels.

Cardiac arrest has a 70 to 80 percent mortality rate and affects almost half a million people per year. From CPR to faster emergency services, various methods have been used to lower those numbers. But according to a new Penn Medical School study, other factors need to be taken into account - research found that the survival rate of cardiac arrest patients also depends on where the patient is taken for care.

When Bernie Madoff was arrested on December 12, it was easy to dismiss him as another Wall Streeter getting his due. In the wake of massive bank and investment firm failures, we've become desensitized to the damage that's crippled our financial system. For liberal arts students especially, the fall of the titans has produced the sweet satisfaction that comes with choosing a life of Proust instead of Fuld.

The Undergraduate Assembly held its first official meeting of the semester Sunday night, during which it reassessed last semester's projects and work done by UA members over winter break before launching into new issues. The main legislative proposals addressed included potentially low class attendance for today's presidential inauguration ceremonies and separate budget requests for UA funding by the pre-orientation programs PennArts and PennGreen.

Students celebrate accomplishments of King, Obama on MLK day

Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy continues to live on in members of the Penn and greater Philadelphia communities. Last night, Alpha Kappa Alpha fraternity, the Multicultural Greek Council and Onyx Senior Honor Society hosted the annual candlelight vigil honoring MLK Jr.
