When you’re left without a plan for housing for the next year, your options diminish. Before you can say, “Where the hell is Sansom West?” it’s September, and you’re moving into the Quad again for a second year.


Penn tuition has a reputation for being excessively pricey — but experts think otherwise. The University was recently ranked eighth on Kiplinger’s 2009-2010 list for Best Values in Private Universities.

For most college students, dorm living is the staple of college life. More than 5,000 students live on campus, including almost 800 people in each highrise and nearly 1,500 in the Quadrangle.

Nov. 14 — A juvenile unaffiliated with the University, 11, was arrested at about 2:45 a.m. for allegedly assaulting a police officer on the 4000 block of Chestnut Street.

Students studying abroad spring semester should apply for college-house residences the following year in mid-December before they leave. Those who are studying abroad in the fall cannot apply for housing until Oct. 1, when materials are available online.

Gender-neutral housing is a program in which students can live with other students of the opposite gender. All upperclassmen students may apply for gender-neutral housing. Additional forms and agreements are required.

Typically, Penn’s low-rise housing refers to Gregory, Stouffer and W.E.B. Du Bois College Houses. They are called "low" in comparison to the taller high rises — Harrison, Harnwell and Rodin. They house students of all ages.

Rising sophomores and juniors with GPAs above 2.5 can apply to be RAs. They should submit a letter of application that captures their academic interests, skills and relevant experience. Two references are also required.

Within the college houses, residential programs allow students (and sometimes faculty) who share a passion for a particular subject to live together. Subjects range from arts and culture to science and technology.

For upperclassmen who wish to remain in their buildings, each college house holds its own lottery to assign rooms. While each house’s lottery is different, most houses award points based on seniority and the number of semesters lived in the house.

Community Living is for students who want to live in on-campus housing with a group of six to eight friends. The program allows residents to occupy multiple rooms in the same building and usually on the same floor.

Admissions representatives travel to over 30 countries in any given year, according to Dean of Admissions Eric Furda. And in spite of University-wide budget cuts, the admissions travel budget “hasn’t been cut at all.”

Three suspended members of the wrestling team were arrested Nov. 16 in connection with an aggravated assault allegedly committed on Oct. 3. A preliminary hearing is set for 8 a.m. today.
