Penn’s University Life Space and Events Associate Director Jonathon May died on Dec. 9.

In a Dec. 10 message to the University Life team, Vice Provost for University Life Karu Kozuma wrote that May “helped create vibrant opportunities for community building and connections.”

“He enlivened Houston Hall to be a gathering place for … all, especially our students, and he gifted us with his passion and enthusiasm,” Kozuma added.

In his role overseeing the University Life Space and Events’ Student Engagement team, May worked closely with team members at the Houston Hall Welcome Desk and Penn Student Agencies.

According to a Dec. 9 message from the Space and Events leadership team to Penn Student Agencies team members, May was someone “who cared deeply about the people they worked with.”

“We know this news may come as a shock, and that many of you held [Jonathon] in high regard both personally and professionally,” the email read. “During this difficult time, we encourage you to lean on one another and take the time you need to process this loss.”

Before beginning his position at Penn in May 2024, May served as class dean for junior and senior year students at Allegheny College and as director of student services at Larkin University.

May graduated from the University of Mary Washington with a bachelor’s degree, received a master’s degree in college student personnel from Bowling Green State University, and obtained a Doctor of Education degree from Nova Southeastern University.
