Penn Medicine has named Alicia Gresham to serve as the next chief executive officer of Pennsylvania Hospital.

Gresham will join Penn Medicine from New York City beginning on Jan. 2, 2024. She currently serves as the senior vice president and Chief Operating Officer of Network Operations at Mount Sinai Health System, a position she has been in since 2021.

While at Sinai, Gresham has worked to expand the network’s ambulatory practices across the state of New York and Florida. She also helped to forge partnerships with other New York area hospitals and doctors.

This new position will mark a return to Philadelphia for Gresham and will be her second time working at Penn Medicine. She previously lead special initiatives within the Department of Medicine and subsequently held the position of Director of Access and Operations at the Scheie Eye Institute. Following those positions at Penn Medicine, Gresham served as the director of Specialty Care and Primary Care at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Gresham will replace Theresa Larivee, who served as the CEO of Pennsylvania Hospital for the last 8 years. Larivee was named Chief Business Officer of the University of Pennsylvania Health System in January 2023.

Pennsylvania Hospital — the nation's first hospital, founded in 1751 — sits at 8th and Spruce streets and is one of several hospitals that is part of UPHS. The hospital contains several special centers, including the Joan Karnell Cancer Center, the Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery, and the Penn Neurological Institute, and has 525 inpatient beds.

“I am thrilled to welcome [Gresham] back to Penn Medicine, where she will build upon Pennsylvania Hospital’s plans for growth with a continued focus on the needs of the community we serve and our exceptionally talented workforce,” COO of UPHS Michele Volpe told Penn Medicine.
