The Yale student diagnosed with possible meningitis symptoms last week has been officially diagnosed with serogroup B meningococcal disease.
In response to the diagnosis, the school is offering all students and employees vaccinations against the disease. While students living in residential halls are required to get vaccination against meningococcal disease, the form of the vaccine they are required to get does not protect against the serogroup B disease.
Because meningitis has not been widespread across campus, health officials have advised against large-scale vaccinations. The vaccines will be free of charge to those under Yale Health insurance and Yale Health Hospitalization/Specialty coverage. For those not covered, the vaccinations will cost $256 each.
