Gutmann inspired to attend college by her doctor

In a talk with The Philadelphia Inquirer, President Amy Gutmann, along with other presidents at local four-year colleges and universities, spoke about her thoughts on Obama's proposal to make community colleges free — and how she herself paid for her education.

Gutmann explains that because her parents did not have the chance to attend college — her mom had to work to help support her family during the Great Depression and her dad was helping his family flee Nazi Germany, which left him with no time for school — she was never made aware of the value of college. It was not until her doctor mentioned to her that she should apply to a good school that she decided to apply to Harvard's Radcliffe College.

About Obama's proposal, Gutmann says she "commend[s] President Obama for recognizing [the value of high education] and for starting a constructive dialogue around this issue of paramount importance."

Other school presidents profiled include Daniel Weiss of Haverford College, John Fry of Drexel University and Patrick Harker of the University of Delaware, among others.
