On Monday, Project on Fair Representation filed a federal lawsuit against Harvard University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in an effort to ban race-based affirmative action policies.
The lawsuit claimed that these policies hurt high-achieving white and Asian American students by holding them to a higher standard than students of different racial backgrounds. It proposed that universities employ "race-neutral" policies, such as analyzing the socio-economic backgrounds of prospective students in the admissions process.
Both universities defended their affirmative action policies, claiming that these policies ensure a diverse pool of well-rounded students. "[Harvard] considers each applicant through an individualized, holistic review having the goal of creating a vibrant academic community," Harvard University's General Counsel, Robert Iuliano said.
