A single car crash occurred at the intersection of 38th and Spruce streets Friday around 2:45 p.m. The crash knocked down a street pole.

According to the Division of Public Safety, a female driver was turning her car onto 38th Street from Spruce Street when she lost control of the vehicle. She ended up hitting the traffic signal, which was in the northeast corner of the intersection, knocking it down and totalling her car.

There were no serious injuries to the driver, but she was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania to be “checked out,” according to DPS. There were no other injuries.

The driver was not affiliated with the University.

Stephen Long, a former New York Police Department officer who was at Penn today working as a bodyguard and driver, said he was in the cul-de-sac of the Steinberg Conference Center when he heard “a huge crash.”

Eastbound traffic was temporarily backed up from 38th to 40th streets on Spruce. As the traffic signal was out, police officers were directing traffic through the intersection.
