IFC president arrested at Princeton

Authorities say Lunoe had alcohol, was uncooperative with officers at football game

Interfraternity Council President and Wharton senior Christian Lunoe was arrested for obstruction of justice and disorderly conduct Saturday at Princeton University.

Princeton Police Deputy Chief Charles Davall wrote in an e-mail that public safety officers attempted to escort Lunoe from Princeton Stadium during the Penn-Princeton football game because he had a “hydration pack with an alcoholic beverage, which was not permitted.”

Davall said Lunoe was uncooperative as officers escorted him from the stadium. “When they were outside … he continued to be uncooperative by refusing to give the officers his name and began cursing and swinging his arms to pull away from the officers,” Davall wrote. Lunoe was placed under arrest but was then released “on his own recognizance.”

Lunoe wrote in a statement that his arrest was an “unfortunate incident” in a situation “exacerbated by the amount of confusion and lack of communication between the security officials and police representatives.”

Lunoe explained that after learning that 10 to 12 buses of Penn students — some Greek-affiliated — would attend the game, Princeton officials asked Greek leadership at Penn to help disseminate information about Princeton’s tailgating policies and “provide support at the football game in the event any issues were to arise.”

According to Lunoe, there was “a potential dispute between an unidentified Penn student and Princeton security official.” The dispute was over a hydration pack containing alcohol that Lunoe claims was not his. According to Lunoe, he stepped in “as the student leader identified to handle such situations.”

Office of Student Affairs/Fraternity Sorority Life Director Scott Reikofski did not return requests for comment Monday afternoon.

As Penn’s IFC president, Lunoe has advocated for reforms that relax Penn’s alcohol policy for undergraduate events, primarily due to concerns that the current rules fuel binge drinking off campus.

In addition to Lunoe’s arrest, Princeton DPS reported a case of disorderly conduct at the Penn-Princeton men’s soccer game that caused “a referee [to ask] the event security staff to remove spectators from the north end stands because a group of spectators was throwing trash on the field from the stands,” Davall wrote. The identity or affiliation of the offenders at the soccer game could not be confirmed, and they reportedly left without any further problems.
