Engineers hold Sadie Hawkins this weekend

Engineering is bringing sexy back.

The Society of Women Engineers is hosting the Engineering Semi-Formal this Saturday in Quain Courtyard, between Levine and Skirkanich Halls.

The theme for the dance is “Sexy Can I” with an attention grabbing logo — ?exy. The semi-formal is a Sadie Hawkins dance in which women invite men as their dates.

The SWE board hopes the semi-formal will be an opportunity for engineers and others to socialize outside of the classroom.

“Unfortunately, we’re always shut in doing lab reports and problem sets,” Engineering junior Kathryn Downes said. “We thought it would be a great idea to host an event that would allow engineers to relax and have a good time.”

The Engineering Semi-Formal used to be an annual school-wide event during the 1990s that fell off the agenda over the years. This is SWE’s first attempt to reinstate the dance in the hope that it will become an official event in the coming years.

Engineering junior and SWE President Sammy Wang intends to make the occasion SWE’s flagship social event.

“While we hold many social events during the year, it is not one of our pillars as an organization,” Wang added. “But we’d really like to make school-wide bonding within Penn Engineering a priority,” Wang added.

Bonding with other engineers is also the main reason many plan to attend. “The Semi-Formal could be a good way to get your friends together to go and have fun. The free stuff is a plus,” Engineering sophomore Aimee Kim said.

Beginning at 8 p.m., the Semi-Formal offers free gift bags, which include L’Oreal items, and various raffle prizes. Refreshments and dessert are provided. Tickets can be purchased for $5 in the Towne Building and $7 at the door.
