Jaworki, Burley race at USATF meet.
The past and present of Penn's track team collided last weekend when Penn alum and 2003 NCAA 800-meter champion Sam Burley and Junior Courtney Jaworski both competed at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in Los Angeles. Both runners advaned to the semifinals with Burley winning his preliminary heat and Jaworski placing fourth. In the semifinals, however, both struggled and failed to qualify for finals. Burley ran a time of 1:49.77 for sixth in his heat and Jawoski's time of 1:50.66 placed him eighth in his heat.
For Jaworski, the race was a somewhat disappointing end to an impressive Junior season. Jaworski swept the 800m at both the indoor and outdoor Heptagonal Championships and earned All-American status with his 7th place finish in the event at the NCAA meet. -- Fred David Ivy prez meetings to start today The eight Ivy League presidents will begin their annual summer meetings today.
While Penn President Amy Gutmann and Ivy League Executive Director Jeff Orleans would not disclose any details of the agenda for these meetings, they are usually used to discuss league-wide policies -- particularly concerning athletic rules.
In the past few years, the Council of Ivy Group Presidents has made changes to the Academic Index -- a formula which concludes whether a high school athlete is academically eligible for Ivy League athletics -- and the amount of practice time for athletic teams. -- David Burrick
