Lions win first ever Ivy W. Lax game in 9th year of existence

With the threat of its 50th straight Ivy League loss looming, the Columbia women's lacrosse team stepped it up.

In the program's ninth season, the Lions finally won their first league game, beating winless Harvard, 11-9, on Saturday in Boston.

Kate Lombard's goal with 14 minutes left in the game gave Columbia a two-goal lead, which they would not relinquish. Then after Liz Sanseau scored to put the team up by three, it became clear that the skid was finally over.

There have been close calls in the past for the Lions, who do not have a varsity men's lacrosse team.

Last season in New York, Columbia led Brown 9-3 in the second half, but the Bears finished the game on a 9-2 run and scored the game's last four goals to win 12-11.
