W. Tennis makes early exit from Southern Calif.

On Saturday, four members of the Penn women's tennis team headed out west to Southern California for the 2004 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships. The tournament, which is held at UCLA and the Riviera Tennis Club, lasts from Oct. 2-10.

Shelah Chao, Julia Koulbitskaya, Yulia Rivelis and Michelle Mitchell returned home after tough losses in the qualifying rounds.

Although both Chao and Rivelis cruised through their first and second matches, their road through the tournament was halted in their third-round matches.

Kristin Cargil of Duke beat Chao, 6-0, 6-2 and TCU's Helena Besovic topped Rivelis, 6-1, 6-3. Besovic eventually went on to win the qualifier and enter the main draw.

-- Kelly Landers V-Ball picks Richardson to take Jespersen's place

Orlin Jespersen, the popular assistant coach of the Penn volleyball team, has left the school to become the director of Intramurals and Public Recreation at Cabrini College in nearby Radnor, Pa.

Taking his place will be Andrew Richardson. The Muncie, Ind., native spent the past few months as a volunteer assistant coach at Notre Dame. He was also the head varsity volleyball coach at Elwood Community High School in Elwood, Ind.

While coach Kerry Major Carr expressed excitement over the hiring of Richardson, the sudden departure of Jespersen must come as something of a shock for the Quakers team, for whom Jespersen was almost as important as Carr herself.

-- Harry Berezin Snyder takes Ivy Player of the Week honors

The Penn women's soccer team is gaining momentum, and one of the squad's core players was recognized as the Ivy League Player of the Week.

Senior forward Rachelle Snyder took home the honors after leading the Quakers to a 3-0 win over Cornell with two second- half goals.

Snyder is currently second on the team with 11 points. She is third on the Quakers' all-time list with 15 assists.
