BRIEF: Nigerian star commits to Penn

Onyekwe grew up in Nigeria, and moved to London about four years ago with his parents. He was spotted by a Long Beach assistant shortly after he began playing club basketball. Onyekwe averaged 15 points and 14 rebounds in the states, and signed a letter of intent to play at Long Beach State in California. When the Nigerian native then changed his mind, Long Beach State would not allow him out of the commitment. His options then dwindled to playing for a non-scholarship school or a non-Division I school. Penn coach Fran Dunphy is unable to comment on recruits until they are accepted to Penn. However, Onyekwe's commitment follows those of KoKo Archibong and David Klatsky, forming the beginnings of a strong recruiting class for 2003.
