M. Track set to three-peat

The Penn football team won the Ivy League this year. The basketball team has just completed its second undefeated season. The men's outdoor track and field team is shooting for one better. The Quakers open the 1994 season as two-time defending Ivy champs, looking for their third straight crown. Penn will travel to North Carolina State Saturday for the Raleigh Relays. This inaugural meet of the spring season will attract more than 70 schools from all along the East coast. "Hopefully, we'll bust some of the rust off from the not competing in three weeks," assistant coach Nathan Taylor said. "We want to get some decent opening marks as we make the transition from the indoor to the outdoor events." The Quakers look to junior John Taylor, an all-American last season, to get them off and running. Taylor, a transfer from Brown, is currently ranked 10th in the country in the javelin. Taylor has already qualified for the NCAA national meet in June. Last weekend, Penn hosted a throwing meet where he broke the school record. The Quaker high jump record could also fall this weekend. Senior Henry Hipps, junior Aric Shalev and sophomore David Rechtweg all have a shot at breaking the record, and more importantly, a trip to nationals. Each has jumped close to seven feet. On the track, sophomore Chris Harper will lead the way. He runs all the short sprints, but specializes in the 400-meter dash. Last season as a freshman, he qualified for junior nationals in the 400. Of course, Penn's first order of business is to win the Ivy League. But this team also wants to send as many athletes as it can to the NCAAs. Penn hopes in North Carolina it can get off on the right foot.
