News Brief: Penn Dermatology earns high praise

Penn Medical School's Department of Dermatology was ranked as the number-one academic dermatology program, according to a report published this month in The Dermatology Online Journal.

This report is the first to rank dermatology programs based on academic achievement.

The report is based on data from 2001 to 2004 and took five factors into consideration: publications in 2001 to 2004; funding from the National Institutes of Health; Dermatology Foundation grants from 2001 to 2004; 2004 faculty lectures delivered at national conferences; and number of full-time faculty members who served on the editorial boards of the top three U.S. dermatology journals in the country and of the top four specialty journals.

The University of California-San Francisco took second place and Yale, New York University and the University of Michigan taking third, fourth and fifth places, respectively.

"We are extremely proud of this ranking," Dermatology Department chairman John Stanley said in a press statement last week.
