Zoning board denies liquor store move

The controversial application for a new liquor store at 4237 Walnut St. has been denied by the Philadelphia Zoning Board of Adjustment, site owner Daniel DeRitis said yesterday. DeRitis said he will immediately appeal the decision. "We're not going to give up on it," he said.

This year's Spring Fling can't have been that much fun - there were fewer parties busted than ever. But the event has been heralded by University officials as being safer and more sober than previous Flings, meaning thoughts of moving it out of the Quadrangle are likely to be shelved for the time being.

Shooting investigation underway

Philadelphia Police have begun an investigation into the fatal shooting of an alleged carjacker who was killed Monday during a struggle with Penn Police near 40th and Spruce streets. The man was shot twice when a Penn Police officer's gun discharged as the officer and the man fought over the officer's weapon on the 200 block of Preston Street.

Officials say they may punish for movie piracy

When the MPAA talks, the University listens - well, for the most part. Last month, the Motion Picture Association of America published its list of top-25 colleges for illegal downloading and asked universities to enact four measures to stop the problem, including punishing student offenders and establishing a filter on the college network.

Campus robbery, carjacking ends in fatal shooting

Penn Police shot an alleged carjacker twice at about 11:00 a.m. today. He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and died from the gunshot wounds at about 12:40 p.m.

For victims, to prosecute or not?

Two sexual assaults occurred last week on campus for which the attackers will not be prosecuted, and Division of Public Safety officials say these cases show the dilemma they often face in proceeding with incidents of sexual assault. In both incidents, the victim knew her attacker and reported the crime to Penn Police but ultimately decided not to prosecute.

Patrol mandatory for Phila. officers

Police commanders have the stereotype of sitting around and idly eating donuts, but that's all changing. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson announced last month that Philadelphia's highest ranking officers would be required to join the rest of the force by patrolling the streets for at least four hours each week.

Tempers flare at liquor store zoning hearing

At a Philadelphia Zoning Board meeting yesterday, it was the prospect of alcohol that caused emotions to run high. About 80 West Philadelphia residents, mainly local Muslims affiliated with the Masjid Al-Jamia mosque, filled the zoning hearing to capacity, standing in firm opposition to the relocation of the liquor store on 41st and Market streets to 4237 Walnut St.

Shooting stats a glimmer of hope

Though citywide shooting rates are soaring, it seems there may be a bit of hope for West Philadelphia. The number of assaults with firearms in West Philadelphia - comprised of the 12th, 16th, 18th and 19th police districts - has dropped 35 percent from 2003 to 2006.
