Penn women's swimming is spending four days in Cambridge to compete in the Women's Ivy League Swimming & Diving Championships.

Just as the women's team did last week, the men's squad finished third at the Ivy League Championships, while the women's team finished third at the ECAC Championships.

Penn scored 1,256 points — the most in program history by nearly 200 points — set four new program records, and notched its highest finish ever at the Ivy League Championships.

More than 300 current and former swimmers signed a letter in support of Penn women's swimmer Lia Thomas and all transgender and nonbinary athletes.

The student-athletes wrote in their letter that Thomas was taking “competitive opportunities” away from them, particularly spots in the Ivy League championship meet.

Amid ongoing updates to guidelines on transgender athletes, Penn's women's swimming and diving team stated its full support of teammate Lia Thomas.

The women won a close match while the men dominated to secure victories in the final meet before the Ivy League Championships. 

Beginning on Feb. 1, spectators will be allowed to attend winter sports competitions, which includes men’s and women’s basketball.

With only two meets remaining until the Ivy League Championships in February, Penn men’s and women’s swimming looked to right their respective ships this weekend.

Several seniors closed out the meaningful afternoon at their home pool with notable results, with many underclassmen also stepping up to prove results as well.

“Lia Thomas has met or exceeded all NCAA protocols over the past two years for a transgender female student-athlete to compete for a women’s team. She will continue to represent the Penn women’s swimming team in competition this season," Penn Athletics wrote on Thursday.

Winter sports competition will continue behind closed doors as Penn responds to rising COVID-19 cases in Philadelphia as well as across collegiate sports.

As did fall sports, the winter athletics teams entered the season having not played in almost two years. Unlike this past fall season, however, it looks like a few of these teams have a shot at competing for Ivy League titles.

Thomas will represent the Quakers on Jan. 8 against Dartmouth at home at the Sheerr Pool.
