Phillies catchers Chris Coste and Carlos Ruiz may have been the big-name draws to the event sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Action Sunday night, but Penn security guard Carl Wilson stole the show. Wilson won the night's raffle - a basket full of Phillies paraphernalia including two tickets to a game against the Mets - and then quickly gave it away.

After graduating from Division II Holy Family, new women's basketball coach Mike McLaughlin spent three seasons with the Washington Generals - the long-time nemeses of the Harlem Globetrotters - where he served as team captain and played in over 50 countries.

The day seemed eerily familiar for the Penn softball squad. After winning its first two games of a four-game home stand Saturday against Princeton - by scores of 2-0 and 5-1, respectively - the streaky Quakers suffered a four-run loss in a lackluster performance in yesterday's first game against the Tigers.

Friday afternoon on Senior Day, Lauren Sadaka's name resounded through the crowd. The senior co-captain was in the middle of her final stellar home performance during Penn's 7-0 win over Columbia. But the weekend was just beginning for Sadaka, as yesterday she won the clinching match in Penn's 4-3 win over Cornell in Ithaca, N.

After 34 seasons of unprecedented success as the coach of Penn men's and women's fencing, Hall of Famer Dave Micahnik has announced his retirement from the program, according to a Penn Athletics press release earlier today. Micahnik's official announcement was made at the fencing team banquet last night at the Inn at Penn.

Maryland was nearly an hour late arriving to Franklin Field Saturday, but when the final whistle blew it was the Quakers who never showed up. Penn was going for its first win ever against the Terrapins (whose bus driver took a wrong turn, hence the delay).

In what has been a season of close losses, disheartening Ivy weekends and unfulfilled expectations, Penn baseball had one last chance to salvage a shot at the Gehrig Division with two doubleheaders against Princeton this weekend. But by the time the Quakers notched a win in the last of their four-game set, it was too late.

Although they missed Spring Fling on Friday and Saturday, the Penn women's lacrosse team still had a weekend to remember in Providence, R.I. With their 14-4 win over Brown Saturday, the Quakers are officially the Ivy League Champions. Saturday's win clinched the title outright for the undefeated Red and Blue (13-0, 7-0 Ivy).

Will Gordon carried the Quakers to victory yesterday. The first baseman and pitcher was dominant in all aspects of the game. Penn scored four runs in the eighth inning to pull off an impressive 12-9 victory on the road against La Salle yesterday, as the right-handed junior went 3-for-4 with five runs batted in.

After leaving with a 48-90 record, Pat Knapp has a successor. Former Holy Family women's basketball coach Mike McLaughlin will take over the program at Penn, a source close to the situation confirmed. With a record of 381-55 at the Division II school located in Northeast Philadelphia, McLaughlin's .

Given that its starting goalkeeper is a freshman from San Diego, it's hardly surprising that the Penn men's lacrosse team is trying to ride a wave. Only this time, Joe Hegener, head coach Brian Voelker and the Quakers will be trying to build off three consecutive strong defensive performances, not surfing on the coast.

With their twelfth win of the season under their belts and at least a share of the Ivy title, the Quakers' mission is nearly complete. The No. 3 Penn women's lacrosse team (12-0, 6-0 Ivy) has only one game left to secure the outright league championship and, as an added benefit, prevent rival Princeton from grabbing a share of the title.

Though the softball season is quickly coming to a close, two Ivy League rivals are heading into this weekend still hungry to prove why they deserve to be atop the South Division. Penn (9-24-1, 4-8 Ivy) will hope to sweep Princeton (13-15, 7-5) in a weekend of twin doubleheaders that start tomorrow at 12:30 on Warren Field.

With just two Ivy League matches left, Jonathan Boym and the men's tennis team are having a hard time figuring out exactly how their season slipped away. "I don't know if one particular thing went wrong this season; I don't know," Boym repeated. Maybe it was "just a couple of bad breaks.

This is the last chance for the women's tennis team. As the Quakers close their 2009 season with matches against Columbia and Cornell this weekend, the Quakers will try to avoid a winless Ivy League season, in sole senior and team captain Lauren Sadaka's last weekend wearing the red and blue.
