Penn men’s basketball has notched yet another unlikely 'first': Big 5 champions, for the first time in seventeen years. 

After dropping their first two Ivy League games against Princeton, Penn men’s basketball responded with a hard-fought win over Temple to clinch at least a share of the Big 5 title.

The former Penn and current Temple basketball coach has been synonymous with the Big 5 and Philadelphia basketball since he was scorching defenses for La Salle back in the late 60s.

Princeton men’s basketball senior Devin Cannady was suspended from the team following his arrest Friday, according to The Trentonian.

Dropping their last four games, two in overtime, the Quakers have a lot of figuring out to do before they face Big 5 opponent Temple on the road this Saturday.

Just starting their season, the Quakers have shown that they are on the rise. But Penn’s recent success on the mat isn’t just temporary.

The members of Penn men's squash had a unique chance to bond as a team over winter break while playing the sport they love and visiting cultural and historical landmarks in Europe.

Among these top performers was track’s Evan Lee, who won the heptathlon at the Wesley A. Brown Invitational in Annapolis, Md. this past Saturday.  

The men’s team extended its six match winning streak this weekend, taking down No. 7 Yale with a 7-2 win in New Haven followed by a sweeping 9-0 win in Providence against No. 15 Brown.

Penn will travel to New Jersey to play the Tigers on Saturday, and next week the Quakers will return to Philadelphia to host their Ivy League foe on Jan. 12. On the surface, this scheduling doesn’t seem to make much sense; looking deeper doesn’t reveal any solid justification either. 

In the middle of winter break, the Quakers traveled over 800 miles to Hoffman Estates, Ill. to compete in the Midlands Championships, one of the premier tournaments in collegiate wrestling. 

In a back-and-forth overtime thriller, Penn men’s basketball fell to a previously winless Monmouth team at the Palestra, 76-74.

With a new year full of big games, fresh faces, and untold stories on the horizon, it’s time to suggest a few New Year’s resolutions for Penn Athletics. 

The Quakers struggled to score throughout the game, ultimately losing to Toledo, 77-45.  One of the biggest reasons for the Quakers’ tribulations was an early injury to freshman forward Michael Wang.

Penn rolled and held on to defeat New Mexico on Saturday afternoon in Albuquerque by a score of 75-65.

This is the grittiest team I’ve ever seen. Everything they do is gritty. The way in which the Quakers came up with two of the biggest wins in their career in a span of a week made me sure of it — Penn men’s basketball is the grittiest team in Philadelphia.
