Two shootings at two night clubs on the corner of 38th and Chestnut streets in the past month shouldn't come as a surprise, experts say. Problem bars and night clubs tend to cluster together and night clubs that attract a dangerous clientele are recipes for incidents like the shooting that occurred at Club Wizzards Monday morning.

We've been called a lot of unflattering things lately. Some call us the millennial generation, a hyper-needy bunch. Put-upon college administrators are forced to acquiesce to our demands for bigger dorm rooms and fancier dining options. Thomas Friedman calls us Generation Q, the quiet Americans.

When it comes to politics, some students think that Penn just isn't trying hard enough. The loss of last month's Democratic presidential debate to Drexel University, coupled with the school's lack of financial support of John McCain's speech last week, has left student political groups disappointed with Penn's efforts to attract political speakers and debates to campus.

A patchwork of AIDS history is spreading across Penn's campus to honor over 90,000 individuals who have lost their lives to the fatal disease. Ten 144-square foot panels from the 54-ton AIDS Memorial Quilt have been hung at the LGBT Center, Van Pelt Library and other campus locations through next Tuesday, when they will be relocated to Houston Hall's Hall of Flags for a memorial event.

EASTON, Pa., Nov. 28 - The last time Penn and Lafayette met, the Quakers hit the century mark. Satiated students went to bed with cheesesteaks in their stomachs. Not last night, when the return game was played some 70 miles from Abner's. There would be no cheesesteaks, no hundred points, and certainly no win.

Penn President Amy Gutmann is bringing her political expertise to the city of Philadelphia. Mayor-elect Michael Nutter appointed Gutmann and five other co-chairs to his transition team, yesterday. Gutmann said she was "honored" to serve as part of the team, which will evaluate the city's operations and develop long-term policy plans in preparation for the mayor-elect's administration.

They just seemed too young. Too young to be pregnant, too young to be worrying about HIV, too young to be making the kinds of choices they were making. It sounds like a cliche, or a tool of the right wing to illustrate the decline of American morality. But, to me, they're just kids who are falling through the cracks of Philadelphia's inconsistent sex-education policy.

TEP pres. to lead InterFraternity Council

Last night, Wharton and College junior David Ashkenazi defeated two other candidates to become the new president of the InterFraternity Council. The election was held after College junior Matt Dwyer resigned the post last week due to personal reasons. The president of the IFC serves as the liaison between the fraternity community and the administration as well as an adviser to chapter presidents Ashkenazi is currently the president of Tau Epsilon Phi.

W. Swimming pushes hard, but men rest up

The Penn men's and women's swim team will face off against unfamiliar faces this weekend at the second annual Kenyon Invitational. A change from the usual Ivy competition, the Quakers will compete against powerhouses like Kenyon and Kansas. Because the Invitational is scheduled the same way as the Ivy League Championships, with the preliminary events in the morning and finals in the afternoon, it gives both teams a good opportunity to prepare for the championships at the end of the season.

No more afternoon practices. No more Saturday games. No more road trips, no more victories and no more losses. No more football. You likely won't see this year's graduating seniors in the NFL, so with the close of their Penn careers comes the close of their football careers.

W. Hoops | Never shy, Biemer hits the spot for Quakers

Clinging to a three-point lead with 19 seconds left, there was no doubt which player Penn would lean on to put the game away. Junior forward Carrie Biemer calmly nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key to effectively end the game as the Quakers finished off a 66-58 victory over the Broncs (3-3).

The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences earned national recognition last week when a national index ranked four departments within the school among the top ten Engineering programs. Academic Analytics, a company that sells research on faculty productivity, released these rankings in its third annual Faculty Scholarly Productivity index.

M. Hoops | Penn pays the price for a porous defense

EASTON, Pa., Nov. 28 - How quickly a lead can come and go in college basketball. After a hard-fought first half that saw the Quakers head into the locker room down five, they came out strong after the break. Penn clawed back and took a one-point advantage with 12:09 to go.

The calendar may read November, but the Penn wrestling team might think it's March when it sends its varsity squad to the Las Vegas Invitational, held tomorrow and Saturday. This 48-team national tournament includes No. 7 Missouri, No. 9 Wisconsin, No. 10 Michigan, No.

If you build it, they will come - at least, that's part of the rationale behind SEPTA's massive reconstruction of the Market-Frankford El. Improved public transit means more people can access nearby businesses, stimulating the local economy. That's the long-term goal.

Pay a little more for a bottle of water, help a thirsty child in the third world. Sounds great, right? The founder of Ethos Water was on campus two weeks ago to describe how this business model is going to save the planet. As far as bottled water goes, Ethos is all right - I mean, if I'm going to allow someone to commodify something essential to my survival, the profits might as well build a well in Bangladesh rather than a pool in an executive's backyard.
