In a letter, the Asian American Coalition for Education called on the Common App to "stop the practice of subdividing Asian American applicants into 10 subcategories."

The University received 6,731 applications, a 9.5 percent increase from last year's record-breaking number of 6,147 applications.

Brown has helped victims of natural disasters multiple times in the past, including after Hurricane Katrina and the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. 

Other schools like Yale and Cornell have also extended early admissions deadlines for students affected by natural disasters.

A freshman who applied to the University of Rochester as a home-school student was recently expelled for falsifying her transcript. 

Some higher education experts said the new platform may just add to the list of things prospective students have to do, instead of easing the admissions process.  

In the 2017 ranking, Penn tied with Duke University for the eighth spot, but Duke dropped to No. 9 this year.

Director of college preparation group One-Stop College Counseling Laurie Kopp Weingarten described Big Data as “the wave of the future” for college admissions. “Many times now instead of just meeting a Director of Admissions, I meet the Vice President of Enrollment Management,” she said.

Cassandra Hsiao, a first-generation Malaysian immigrant, wrote about her struggles with the English language.

"The Class of 2021 Facebook group will remain active this year, barring any unforeseen issues,” Vice Dean and Director of Marketing and Communications Kathryn Bezella said in an emailed statement. 

Virtually all schools cited their admission percentage and the size of their applicant pool.

“I personally have not noticed discrimination against Asian-Americans in my practice,” Laurie Kopp Weingarten, director of One-Stop College Counseling, said.
