Joking about Canada Goose jackets has been a staple throughout the various Ivy League meme pages. The popular black parka with the fur-lining on its hood has become a recent fad among Ivy League teens. My friends and I had a running joke of trying to count all the Canada Geese we've seen on Locust Walk.
In every Penn women's basketball game, there are inevitably many instances of physical play. Players jostle for position, rebounds, and loose balls all game long.
It’s that time of year again.
The website babe.net published a story two weeks ago on sexual assault allegations that detailed a date and subsequent sexual encounter between a woman (who went by the pseudonym Grace for the purposes of the story) and the comedian Aziz Ansari.
She’s back, by popular demand.
One will likely hear them on the first floor of Huntsman and the Starbucks Under Commons. Many travel in packs, donning long coats and texting away on an esoteric app called “KakaoTalk.” They are: Korean students at Penn.
My mom had always told me to get my head out of my phone and banned it any time we ate as well. I never really understood why and thought maybe it was just a generational gap thing.
The primary suspect in the homicide case of College sophomore Blaze Bernstein was charged with murder on Jan. 17 for allegedly stabbing Bernstein to death.
Having a semester at Penn under my belt is a feat in and of itself. Like every other naive first-year student, I wanted to get a 4.0 GPA. However, that was kind of unrealistic. I am sure that some people were able to muster all their effort and get the coveted 4.0 GPA that most Ivy League admits vie for, but that is not the norm. In 2001, across all four undergraduate schools, the average GPA was 3.345.
A new public survey on sexual harassment in higher education has pointed toward a range of alleged incidents at Penn. One respondent said her Penn professor hugged her and caressed her neck even when she tried to break free; another wrote that "in a sick moment, [her professor] stuck his tongue inside [her] mouth."
College freshman William Steinberg, 18, was among 10 American tourists who died in a fatal plane crash on Dec. 31. Steinberg, who was traveling in Costa Rica with his family, died when his plane, which was traveling from the resort town of Punta Islita on the Pacific coast, crashed into a mountainous region.
In recent years, as various universities have stepped forth to acknowledge early institutional ties to slavery, Penn has remained steadfast in asserting that it does not have a history of direct involvement with slavery or the slave trade. Now, new undergraduate research places this assertion into doubt.
As the semester winds down and I inch closer to the end of both my sophomore fall and my first semester at Penn, I can’t help but think about how little time I have left here. Two and a half years. That’s it. What have I made of my time here? What will I do to make sure that my years here are as memorable as possible? Will I bear any sort of real impact on this school, or will I be just one of hundreds of thousands of Penn alumni?
Outside, snow is gently piling up, Locust Walk is oddly silent, and for once, I feel strangely at peace. I’m sitting here in Saxbys, writing my last column of the semester on my 20th birthday.
That’s a pretty great way to end the semester.
After a deceptively short holiday break, Penn fencing prepares for its second tournament of the season: The Vassar Invitational.
They’re back and (hopefully) better than ever.
You will never live to see another Penn men’s basketball game like its quadruple-overtime win at Monmouth on Saturday night.
Mehmet Oz, the Turkish-American cardiothoracic surgeon known for his television appearances on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and his own talk show, "The Dr. Oz Show," paid Penn students a visit on Nov. 13. The 1986 Wharton graduate, who has been criticized by other doctors for having a passion for financial returns over the scientific practice of medicine, said he was glad he came to a campus that valued both.
