On Monday, two more Penn football seniors are set to enter the transfer portal.
Senior quarterback Liam O'Brien and senior offensive lineman Maxwell Freeman announced that they are entering the transfer portal.
Both athletes have exhausted their Ivy League eligibility but have an additional year of eligibility available to use at another school because they played four games or fewer during their freshman season in 2022, which is the participation limit for an NCAA redshirt.
The Ivy League does not recognize redshirts. However, NCAA regulations allow players to use would-be redshirts years at other schools.
“I'm deeply grateful for the past four years at Penn. For the teammates who became brothers, the coaches who invested in me, and my family and community that has supported my journey since day one.” O'Brien wrote on X. “I've decided to enter the transfer portal as a graduate transfer. I'm excited to explore new opportunities, continue growing, and compete at the highest level.”
In his first two seasons, O'Brien served as backup quarterback to 2025 Wharton graduate Aidan Sayin, who became Penn’s all-time pass completion leader.
O'Brien's most notable game was in the 2024 season at Cornell. After taking over the starter position from Sayin earlier that season, O’Brien led the team to a historic victory. The performance at Cornell was dubbed ‘Liamsanity’ as O'Brien broke the program records for single-game program records for passing touchdowns and total touchdowns.
Before playing football at Penn, O'Brien was set to play lacrosse for Cornell. His athleticism from being a dual-sport athlete has been a point of praise.
Freeman has been a veteran in the Red and Blue’s offensive line as left guard. He notably helped former Penn running back Malachi Hosley to an Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year campaign in 2024. The offensive line last season only allowed 15 sacks all season, the ninth fewest in NCAA FCS football.
This news follows the transfer announcements of four fellow seniors on the team as well as the announcement of head coach Ray Priore's resignation on Monday.
