Penn Medicine broke ground its $401 million Princeton Cancer Center on Monday, with opening scheduled May 2028.
Penn Med's announcement reported that the center will deliver a multitude of cancer services to patients in central New Jersey. It will be located on the Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center campus, marking the largest expansion of Princeton Health since 2012, and is set to open in May 2028.
“A cancer diagnosis disrupts routines and introduces a level of uncertainty that touches everything in a patient’s life," Penn Med CEO Kevin Mahoney wrote in the announcement. “The Penn Medicine Princeton Cancer Center will help us deliver cutting-edge research and clinical innovations to Central New Jersey, ensuring care that is close to home, carefully coordinated, and deeply compassionate.”
The center will include over 40 exam rooms, 30 infusion chairs, and two linear accelerators for radiation therapy. It will also allow more precise and early diagnoses, with a breast imaging center and advanced diagnostic technologies — including CT, MRI, and SPECT/CT — that provide clearer images at lower radiation doses.
This $401 million investment is part of a continuing effort by Penn to improve cancer care.
Last week, Penn Med rolled out new technologies and strategies to combat the toll that cancer treatments can take on patients’ time. Penn Med outlined three solutions that it is implementing to combat the issue: self-triaging using text messaging, 24-hour operations for its Oncology Evaluation Center at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and a home-care nursing program called “Cavalry.”
The Princeton Cancer Center will also promote Penn Med's effort to be the “nation’s most environmentally friendly health care organization.”
“The Cancer Center will feature a blend of forward-thinking design with environmental stewardship, targeting prestigious LEED Gold certification and continuing the system’s efforts to become the nation’s most environmentally friendly health care organization,” the announcement continued.

The LEED Gold certification is part of the LEED rating system through the US Green Building Council. The rating system includes a four-step verification process that addresses the management of energy and water usage, waste disposal, and indoor environmental quality.
“Energy recovery technology will play a key part in the facility, providing 100 percent outside air while exceeding energy efficiency standards and renewable energy purchasing will supply 50 percent of the project’s annual energy demand,” the announcement read.
