No team reaches its full potential without strong leadership — and for Penn men’s squash, that leadership comes from coach Gilly Lane, a 2007 College graduate and The Daily Pennsylvanian’s coach of the year. Now in his eighth season at the helm, Lane has assembled what may be the most talented team in program history. Through world-class recruiting and player development, he has not only elevated Penn to national prominence but also secured his place in squash history.
Lane is also a standout squash player in his own right, having played for the Penn men’s squash team as a student. After returning to coach his alma mater in 2013, his mission was clear: Take the program to heights it had never reached — a national championship.
Having accomplished that goal last season, the team seemed to face little resistance en route to a dominant path to a repeat. But beneath the face, the journey was anything but easy. Lane had to keep his squad focused, humble, and grounded in pursuit of the ultimate goal. Winning matches was important — but maintaining a championship mindset was even more critical.
With Lane at the helm, Penn men’s squash has entered a golden era — and shows no signs of slowing down.
