You win some, you lose some.
After notching its first win of the season, a 10-6 victory over then No. 8 North Carolina, Penn men’s lacrosse let Villanova slip away in an 8-7 loss Saturday at Franklin Field.
Last Tuesday, the Quakers (1-3) took the early lead against the Tar Heels (5-2) with a Tim Schwalje goal. But North Carolina jumped back quickly and gained a 2-1 lead with two unassisted goals.
The Red and Blue struck back and went into halftime with a 3-2 lead.
The Quakers and Tar Heels traded goals throughout the third quarter, but a 3-0 Penn run in the fourth put the Red and Blue up for good.
Dan Savage scored a hat trick for the Quakers, two of which were power-play goals. John Conneely, Ryan Parietti and Schwalje scored two goals apiece.
While the Quakers closed against the Tar Heels, they failed to repeat the feat against No. 12 Villanova.
The Wildcats (4-1) scored four goals in the final quarter to erase a two-point deficit and beat Penn, 8-7.
The Quakers held a 6-2 lead with under a minute to play in the third quarter when Villanova scored two power-play goals in just 10 seconds.
Zack Losco scored for Penn to keep a three-point lead in the fourth, but the Wildcats scored four unanswered goals — three unassisted with two coming from Max Hart — to seal the come-from-behind victory. Hart’s final goal came with just one second to play in regulation.
The Quakers open up their Ivy schedule Saturday at Princeton.
