Philadelphia Mayor and 1979 Wharton graduate Michael Nutter has extended the weekend curfew once again to discourage violent flash mobs.
The curfew, enacted Aug. 12 and originally set to expire Sept. 3, was extended through Labor Day weekend and on Friday was extended through this weekend.
The executive order mandates a 9 p.m. curfew for children between the ages of 13 to 17 during the weekend to combat flash-mob violence. The same restrictions applied Friday night and will apply Saturday night as well, Division of Public Safety spokesman Jared Hupp said.
The curfew applies to Philadelphia’s Center City and University City areas.
No flash mob attacks have occurred since the curfew was enacted, Nutter told The Philadelphia Inquirer.
There were no curfew citations this summer in the Penn Patrol zone — which extends from 30th Street to 43rd Street and between Market Street and Baltimore Avenue — Vice President for Public Safety Maureen Rush said in a previous interview. “We don’t expect there will be a huge change” when the curfew expires, she added.
