In a gesture of neighborliness and an acknowledgement of the climate surrounding influenza this season, Campus Apartments last week handed out flu shots to its residents, providing an alternative to students who were unable to find one at maxed-out private clinics or Student Health.
Campus Apartments’ decision to distribute seasonal-flu shots was a prudent and creative one. College living situations are notorious for being breeding grounds for flu and other viruses. It’s not at all unusual for students living off-campus to room with seven or nine other students, or for apartment complexes and converted houses to hold upwards of 30 students.
Its decision is especially appreciated because Student Health’s store of flu vaccines was depleted earlier this semester, as more students than usual attempted to get vaccinated.
Because the specter of swine flu has put even seasonal flu on students’ radars, more students than ever are likely to want to get a flu vaccine. We’ve written before about our disappointment in the flu-vaccine manufacturers and Student Health for not properly estimating the number of seasonal-flu vaccines needed, and we’re glad to see Campus Apartments step in to fill the void for its residents.
