A Cornell University junior died of complications from H1N1 influenza Friday night.
Warren Schor, a 20-year-old economics and management major from New York, is the first university student in the United States to die of the infection.
As of last Wednesday, over 450 Cornell students had been diagnosed with probable cases of H1N1, according to Cornell health officials.
It is not yet known whether there were any other health issues that contributed to Schor's death.
The university also reported that about 520 other students have been diagnosed with influenza-type illness in the past three weeks.
Cornell is not the first university to have a major outbreak of H1N1. Washington State University, for example, had over 2,600 suspected cases out of a student body of about 18,000, according to The Seattle Times.
A Cornell spokesman said the university is working with health agencies and reaching out to students about precautions to avoid the further spread of the illness among the student body.
