Last night's student government address featured presentations by student leaders set to chart-topping hits like Pras' "Ghetto Supastar" and Mandy Moore's "Candy" - but the event wasn't all fun and games in the Nomination and Elections Committee's fifth annual State of the School Address.
The keynote speaker, former Undergraduate Assembly Chairman and Class Board President Jason Levy, spoke about his efforts to end the self-segregation on campus by attempting - and failing - to revamp the freshman housing process. He offered advice to current leaders.
"Try not to focus on the wins you make as student government leaders, but rather on the process it takes to get you there," he said.
Here are the updates from each of the six branches:
n UA Chairman and College senior Jason Karsh reported on the ongoing activities of each UA committee.
From Academic Affairs: they plan to revamp Penn InTouch and bring students a new Calendar system and free printing.
From Facilities: Thanksgiving airport shuttles, off-campus recycling, and extended Van Pelt hours. Stay tuned for Clash of the Classes next semester.
From Housing: look for improved laundry services and toilet seat covers for the College Houses, as well as a more efficient housing application process.
From Student Life: iTunes U, WikiPenn, and online ticketing for student events are all on the agenda for next semester.
n Newly elected Student Activities Council Chairman and College junior Eric Van Nostrand spoke about SAC's goals to play a greater role in support for student groups, as well as to make funding more equitable.
Next semester, SAC will focus on their Spring Activities Fair, reevaluate group funding and coordinate with umbrella groups like the Performing Arts Council.
n Social Planning and Events Committee Chairman and College senior Max Cancre used poetry and pictures to highlight speakers and performers that SPEC brought this past semester like Whoopi Goldberg and Robert Redford. He ended with a teaser for February's "Philly Month," an event to bolster Philadelphia culture on campus.
n The Student Committee on Undergraduate Education President and College senior Elizabeth Slavitt spoke about their attempts to integrate undergraduates into academia on campus.
n The four Class Board presidents gave a joint presentation. Freshmen can look forward to a Valentine's Day Formal, sophomores to an Arabian Nights-themed class bash, juniors to a junior-high flashback party and seniors to tomorrow night's event at Blarney's, "Senior Class is Ballin'."
