Report: Amaker will enter the Crimson ranks

Is this a big enough name for you?

Tommy Amaker has been offered the job at Harvard and is expected to take it, according to a report in yesterday's Boston Globe.

The Globe had previously reported that Amaker went to Boston to interview for the job on Friday. The former Michigan coach was said to be competing with Cambridge native Mike Jarvis and former Arkansas coach Stan Heath before Heath took the job at Seton Hall.

Amaker would be the only black head coach at Harvard, an issue that was rumored to be of concern to athletic director Bob Scalise and newly appointed president Drew Faust.

A player and assistant coach at Duke under Mike Krzyzewski, Amaker would bring impressive credentials to a program that seems to be rapidly upping its commitment to basketball.

Before moving to Michigan, Amaker coached for four years and made the Sweet Sixteen at Seton Hall. He then led the Wolverines to an NIT championship in 2004, but never made the NCAA Tournament and was fired after this year.

Harvard's job opened after the Crimson released Frank Sullivan. Sullivan had led the program for 16 years without a league championship.
