Male student mugged at 40th, Locust

In separate incident, student assaulted at 43rd and Spruce

Two male students were assaulted in separate incidents near campus this weekend.

Division of Public Safety officials said a male student was robbed near the intersection of 40th and Locust streets at about 4:15 a.m. yesterday.

About four or five men exited a dark sport-utility vehicle on Locust Street and attacked the student, inflicting a wound to the back of his head, DPS officials said.

He was treated at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and has since been released.

The suspects reportedly took the student's bag, which contained his laptop, and fled south on 40th Street.

No description was available for any of the suspects.

No one has been arrested in connection with the robbery, but DPS officials said Penn Police is currently handling the investigation.

In an unrelated incident, another male student, College senior Aaron Rock, said he was assaulted at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday night near the intersection of 43rd and Spruce streets.

Rock said he was walking from his apartment when two men approached from an unknown direction and attacked him.

The men punched him to the ground and piled on top of him. They then tried to reach in his pocket for his wallet, Rock said.

"I was knocked to the ground by the first punch," he said. "When I hit the ground, I just started screaming."

He added that he was eventually able to push the men off of him and escape his attackers without anything being stolen.

Rock expressed dismay that he saw no Penn security officers until he reached 41st Street - two blocks inside the Penn Patrol Zone, which extends from 30th to 43rd streets and Baltimore Avenue to Market Street.

"I have no idea where they were. My impression was that you had roving security up to 43rd Street," he said.

Rock said he managed to reach a friend's house, where he called Penn Police.

The police asked him to come into the station, located at 4040 Chestnut St., and make a full report, but Rock said he felt doing so would be pointless because he couldn't give a full description of the suspects.

DPS officials were unaware of the incident and said that members of the community should not decide whether an investigation is likely to lead to an arrest.

"We want to be aware of all crimes on campus and give victims all the support they need," DPS spokeswoman Karima Zedan said.

She added that she could not comment on the security presence in this particular instance, but she said that guards sometimes leave their designated post temporarily to act as a walking escort.
