Alumna named acting chairwoman of SEC
Penn graduate Cynthia Glassman has temporarily taken the helm of the Securities and Exchange Commission. She replaces former Chairman William Donaldson, who stepped down last Thursday. Glassman's appointment came the next day.
President Bush appointed the Alexandria, Va., native to the position in an acting capacity while he waits to present his actual choice for the post, California Republican Congressman Christopher Cox, to the Senate for confirmation.
Glassman is in the middle of her term as an SEC commissioner, which ends in June of next year.
An economist, Glassman has previously worked at the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal Reserve Board of Philadelphia, as well as for financial services firm Ernst & Young.
She has taught at the University of Cambridge in England.
Glassman, a Republican, received her doctorate in economics from Penn in 1975 and her bachelor's degree from Wellesley College. She is 58 years old.
