News Briefs: Alarm in Harnwell forces evacuation

Yesterday evening Harnwell residents were woken by a fire alarm, which was pulled due to the smell of smoke.

Although some residents reported the smell, there was no fire, according to Director of Fire and Emergency Services Ted Bateman.

"There was a report of the odor of smoke on the fourth floor," Bateman said. "The Penn Police responded and manually activated the fire alarm system."

The fire department came soon after and cleared the building. After resetting the alarm system, students were allowed back in.

The source of the smell of smoke was not found, Bateman said.

Residential Advisor and College junior Ann Koreisha said, "Students took the alarm seriously which was very important, seeing that this was not a false alarm." She noted that students realized that the fire alarm was set off to ensure the safety of residents, not because of an alarm malfunction.

Many students received e-mails from their residential advisors, apologizing for the inconvenience that occurred at 2 a.m.
